7. Things I Miss from Britain
Marmite
Kinda bait, and I can easily solve this by asking a visitor to bring me some.
The BBC
I know their news coverage is kinda questionable these days, but iPlayer has really good music documentaries and telly programmes cannot be accessed outside of the UK. Radio can on a laptop... but back in Britain I really glean a lot of pleasure from being awoken by Radio 6 coming from my little radio, and having Radio 4's familiar mumble on in the background (unless it's Money Box, which must always be switched off). It's not the same not getting to use the genuine radio-waves to listen!
Toilet seats
I really don't know why, they just don't have any in public toilets!? Or soap... or toilet paper. Guess that's what Bristol are spending our nine grand on. Toilet seats.
Tea
Bait Brit #sorrynotsorry :3
Milk
That dead pasteurised cardboard-packaging milk is foul...
Normal bread
Don't get me wrong, the baguette is amazing. However, I don't have the time or enthusiasm to trek out to a Boulangerie and back before breakfast on a regular basis... Their normal (i.e. sandwich-y, toastable bread) is very weird; it's always sliced, in plastic packaging but also often with the crusts removed... Basically, they either go really proper or really plastic with their pain.
Oatcakes
Not that I eat these very often when I do have the option... but for some reason I have a hankering...
Tasty milky coffees
I feel -totally lame- and mockable saying this but in the interest of honesty, I really miss being able to get the occasional flat white... come @ me. I normally drink coffee black so that's not the problem it's just that they're very small and sometimes it's nice to sip 'n' savour! You can get a machine cappuccino at uni but it's crazily sweet and not quite hitting that spot for me x
Spinach
I've never seen any fresh spinach in any supermarket or épicerie... bizarre, quoi.

This is more specific to living London, but I like being able to go for a walk on a common. There are a couple of parks here but, not to be rude, they suck in comparison to London ones, and are full of (shudder) small French children...
Supermarkets
Although it's exciting shopping in a foreign supermarket because there's different stuff to look at and to try, it's also very time-consuming and stressful shopping in a foreign supermarket, because there's different stuff to look at and to try. They don't arrange things like we do with the cheapest on one end and a price increase as you ascend, so I spend a lot of time squinting at price labels. I am prone to panicking when making culinary decisions so try to stick to veg and stuff, but also they're not great with the whole plastic reduction thing. TBF I'd say Sainsbos are pretty bad too but I think, dans l'ensemble, France is worse.
Also, this is no major concern, but I really can't find any tahini which I think is surprising considering the country, and specifically Marseille, has so much influence from the Maghreb, n'est-ce pas?
Essays
Go ahead 'n' call me a chou-chou, but I just much prefer the English university system. There is much more focus put on pursuing your own interests and researching things properly. Here, you're never required to do research; I've never been required to make a bibliography, and everything seems to be assessed through end of term exams rather than longer essays that you can really sink yer crocs into.
English
I just want to be able to eavesdrop easily again, FFS.
