6. Important Vocab Not Necessarily Reinforced Sufficiently by your Institution

In no particular order:
  • Bof (umm)
  • Bah (err)
  • Quoi? (Huh?)
  • Quoi (added to the end of every sentence, means nothing, the only rough equivalent I can think of is innit)
  • Ça fait chier (FFS)
  • Merde
  • C'est complet (le bus every morning)
  • Carte bleue (= just a credit card... mine is pink... still works!) (And I'm p sure the acronym C.B. by tills stands for this rather than carte bancaire, as I had thought, too)
  • Les Calanques (got a coupla pics of these bad boys in my first post)
  • Mec (dude)
  • Les gars (guys) (can't be used if a group is all female; if it is, they're les filles) (fear not, the patriarchat's alive and well in français
  • Meuf (verlan of femme)
  • Bouffer (= manger)
  • Bosser (= travailler)
  • Kiffer (=aimer)
  • Un minot (kid slash lad according to Word Reference... to me it sounds derogatory for some reason but it isn't!) (I think because it's close to un mégot in my head...)
  • Pastis (aniseed-y alcohol you probably won't like at first)
  • Cassis (alcohol you will probably like immediately - essentially fermented Ribena)
  • Kir (Cassis + white wine)
  • Apéro (drinks but also snacky food at early dinner time) (abbreviation of appératif which I always thought was just a drink... I think it can be, but can also mean like a wee picnicky supper) (Who knows... basically it's polite to bring some crisps with your tinnies)
  • Demie-baguette (important for avoiding hard baguette... unless you can eat a whole one on your own in one sitting...)
  • Café allongé (a small-ish coffee by English standards but less small than yer regular café)
  • Thème (translation into your mother tongue)
  • Version (translation into a foreign language)
  • Vachement (really) (rumour has it that this hails from the North, where there are a lot of cows, so by that logic I'm introducing ratemment and pigeonnement to Marseille)
